EWC Livestock Judging and Show Teams participate in the Iowa Beef Expo (Torrington, WY, February 16, 2017)…The Eastern Wyoming College Livestock Judging and Show Teams recently traveled to the Iowa Beef Expo (IBE) held in Des Moines, IA and brought home several awards. Freshman, Lane Barker, Jaxson Heyrend, both from Evanston, WY and Shelby Cranston, sophomore, Moorcroft, WY prepared and fitted LC Empress and EWC’ s Rolling Thunder for display and sale at the Lowline event at the IBE. Lane then was responsible for the Sale Preview and showcased the pair during the sale. The pair was purchased by Stan and KD Metheny and will remain in Iowa. Metheny is starting a small beef herd with his grandson. He also purchased a bred heifer. He will be breeding Empress to a Minature Hereford Bull in June to see if he can get a black baldy calf in the spring. He is going to keep Rolling Thunder as a bull to breed his other Lowline with in future years. “The team would like to thank Dr. Edwin Bittner, Veterinary Technology Instructor at EWC for originally donating Empress as a calf to the team,” shared Dr. Georgia Younglove, EWC livestock and show team coach and instructor. This event finishes up the season for the show team. The donation of animals from Dr. Edwin Bittner to the livestock judging team and veterinary technology has resulted in over $8600 for those programs from the sale of the animals. Eleven freshman and sophomores judged at the IBE. Tracy Austin, Rozet, WY; Jory Carson, Lynch, NE; Shelby Cranston, Moorcroft, WY; Kort Gartrell, Paxton, NE; Kaycee Gobble, Lewistown, MT; Jaxson Heyrend, Evanston, WY; Hunter Hill, Scottsbluff, NE; Courtney Lamont, Oelrichs, SD; Santiago Ramos, Bridgeport, NE; Ashly Reese, Roy, UT; and Bobbi Sinks, Jordon, MT. Our top finisher was Ramos in both placings and overall. Cranston just returned to the team after a year off but was our top reasons giver. Their next contest is the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic in Kearney, NE.
