FORT LARAMIE NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE

Originally established as a private fur trading fort in 1834, Fort Laramie evolved into the largest and best known military post on the Northern Plains, before its abandonment in 1890. This “grand old post” witnessed the entire sweeping saga of America’s western expansion and Indian resistance to encroachment on their territories.

The grounds are open sunrise to the sun set every day. There is a Park Visitor Center that is open every day other than Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. There are also walking tours of the grounds, features and historic buildings. Mobility assistance is available by contacting the onsite visitor’s center.
Visitor Center Hours:
9 am – 7 pm, Memorial Day to Labor Day
8 am – 4:30 pm the remainder of the year
SUMMER SEASON ACTIVITIES
Living History Programs: Each day during the summer months, park staff dress in reproduction historic clothing provide interpretive information for park visitors from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The stories and facts they share bring the fort to life and aid visitors in gaining a greater understanding o19th-centuryry life.
Interpretive Programs and Ranger Led Tours: Interpretive talks, covering a variety of topics related to Fort Laramie’s history, last approximately 30 minutes each and are held daily during the summer months. Hour-long Ranger – guided tours are also offered throughout the summer.
Historic Weapons Demonstrations: Friday through Sunday, park staff will present a historic weapons program in the black powder demonstration area, north of the visitor center at 12:30 p.m. Programs vary according to staffing but include demonstrations on the history and operation of the 1841 Mountain Howitzer or a discussion of the evolution of American military long arms.
